Last Tuesday, ABPS was visited by Tim from Girri Girra (Aboriginal Experience company), an Aboriginal man of the Wongaibon people (Central West, NSW). Tim took our whole school through a smoking ceremony experience, taking the time to explain certain customs and history, whilst allowing our students to engage in the experience on a deep level. He sang us traditional songs and all students and staff were invited to walk through the smoke.
Our K-2 students had the opportunity to sit, listen and converse with Tim as he told them about his upbringing and personal experience and shared a dreamtime story about two crows that shared their feathers with a cold goose, teaching students about kindness and looking out for others.
Whilst Tim chatted to our K-2 students, our 3-6 students were busy working in their House Groups brainstorming and creating their own Acknowledgement to Country. They included themes such as appreciation of culture, animals, people and environment and related it to the beautiful location ABPS is situated upon. We are looking forward to Tim returning to have a yarn with our 3-6 students soon!
